And here we have the latest fiction release from Amber Stokes. But, wait, it’s a completely new genre. Her other books, like Forget Me Not and Bleeding Heart, were my favorite genre: inspirational historical.
How a Star Falls, however, is my second-favorite genre: contemporary romance. So no longer do her characters (at least in this book) live and love in the 19th century. Now her hero and heroine are just like you and me. They live, they go to college, they have cell phones, and they have to deal with the complicated mess that is often modern life.
I was surprised when Amber first told me this would be a contemporary story. I was even more intrigued when I read the description of the story. This novella is of a new genre: New Adult. Which means the characters are young (around my age) and straddling the world of back-when and now-what.
Amber manages that tension beautifully. I think that’s one of the reasons I read this story in one sitting. Not just because it’s short, but because it’s good. The first scene draws you in. Brielle’s mysterious appearance keeps you guessing. What unfolds puts a smile on your face.
What I liked best about this book? It wasn’t simple or trite. It didn’t package life answers in neat wrapping. Derrick is honestly confused. Brielle is beautifully strange. Yet the ending–while somewhat open–leaves you with the knowledge of exactly how a star falls: Quickly. Completely. Unexpectedly.
Amber Stokes works as a content writer (marketing services) for a Christian publisher. On the side, she self-publishes inspirational fiction depicting the seasons of life and love. Her passion for books compelled her to earn a bachelor’s degree in English and to run her own freelance editing and publicity business for over a year. Happily, this new chapter of her career takes place in the Pacific Northwest – a part of the world she’s always considered home.

Thank you so much, dear Rachelle, for this thoughtful and encouraging review! I hope to have another NA novella or two for you to proofread in the coming months, Lord willing. :) (Assuming your own exciting author adventures don’t keep you from editing, that is!)
