This book reminded me of Christy by Catherine Marshall. A lot. In a very, very good way.
The rustic small mining town in which Lilly finds herself for the summer. The characters who walked off the page and straight into my heart. The kids who made me smile without fail. Even the mysterious miner going by an alias (which never, ever got confusing ~ a witness to great writing) who is smitten with Lilly from the get-go.
Skip Rock Shallows is a light summer read perfect for front-porch reading. With the soft cadence of the writing and the spot-on descriptions of small mining town life, Jan Watson took me on a journey that I won’t soon forget ~ a story with pain and loss, but ultimately one of forgiveness and forever-love.
Those who love Christy will love Skip Rock Shallows. In a style reminiscent of Janette Oke and even Bronte, Jan Watson provides a lovely, heartwarming romance that made me smile and sigh as I read the last line.

Joanne, it's an era that I've haven't really read much about, so when a story set there slips into my hands, it's a treat! :)
