make your words work for you

The Cautious Maiden by Dawn Crandall

I finished The Cautious Maiden in less than five days, which used to be normal for me, but now is like reading at the speed of light (my reading time is so precious now that I’ve got married). But I could scarcely put Vance and Violet’s story down!

Dawn Crandall has done it yet again with this intriguing tale set against the sweep of Maine and Boston. The backdrop is beautiful, the history perfectly set yet not intimidating to the main plot of the story: the romance between Vance and Violet.

Something I appreciate about Dawn’s writing is the first-person point-of-view. This is a style I enjoy (and employ) the most, so I’m always excited about picking up Dawn’s novels. Something else I appreciate? How she creates characters who are both relatable and yet never dull. They are always doing or feeling or studying or thinking something, and then we hit the middle of the book and I can scarcely keep track of it all or turn the page fast enough on my Kindle app, because I must know what happens next!

Which may sound a bit fan-girl-ish, merely because I am. So, readers of historical fiction, pick up this next book by Dawn Crandall. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy the story of the bad boy redeemed (Vance) and the girl who wins his heart!

About the Author

A graduate of Taylor University with a degree in Christian Education, and a former bookseller at Barnes & Noble, Dawn Crandall didn’t begin writing until her husband found out about her long-buried dream of writing a book. Without a doubt about someday becoming traditionally published, he encouraged her to quit her job in 2010 in order to focus on writing The Hesitant Heiress. It didn’t take her long to realize that writing books was what she was made to do. The Everstone Chronicles is Dawn’s first series with Whitaker House. All three books in the series were semifinalists in ACFW’s prestigious Genesis Writing Contest, the third book going on to become a finalist in 2013.
