Kat Varland has had enough of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.
I’ve said time and time again that historicals are my favorite. Betsy St. Amant just proved me wrong.
This book was as delightful as the cupcakes described inside.
How have I not read Betsy St. Amant before? I’ll be looking for her other books after reading this darling contemporary.
The first thing I loved was Kat. She’s brave, but only in the comfort of her own kitchen, and the lack of support from her family is wearing at her. But her best friend is about to change all that for her.
The moment Lucas stepped onto the page, I grinned and fell in love. I liked immediately that Kat had fallen for him and doubted he cared for her in the same way–and then we get a glimpse into his thoughts and my grin just grew! (No spoilers, sorry! Read it for yourself, though!)
The cupcake competition provides the perfect setting for Kat to discover just how brave she can be, and for Lucas to learn a few things about being the hero, too. The way Betsy set it all up and brought it to a close was masterful.
Usually I can predict the ending of contemporaries, and I had an inkling of an idea of where Kat would be at the end of this book. What I didn’t expect was how Lucas would grow or how the ending would be so sweet (there was a twist I would have never seen coming!). I would have liked to have seen just a little more resolution to Kat’s family situation, but I can guess well enough from the clues given.
If you’re looking for a sweet, Southern end-of-summer read with an encouraging message and a heroine who goes for her dreams, pick up Betsy’s All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes.
