Each time I end up at the used bookstore in the city, I find myself in the writing section and have to talk myself out of picking up another copy. I’m pretty sure, if I remember correctly, that I convinced Sarah Elizabeth to buy the book from that same store–and I admit I had to keep myself from stealing it out of her basket when I realized she had a newer addition than mine.
When Meghan (and Sarah!) comes to visit me at the end of the month and we go to that same bookstore, I’ll probably sneak a copy into her basket if she says she doesn’t have this book already.
Why do I love this book? Why am I so eager for all my wordcrafter girlfriends to get in on its magic?
- Because its the tiniest writing book you’ll ever read and it’s a gem.
- Because it’s concise.
- Because it follows its own rules.
It’s not as funny as Eats, Shoots, and Leaves, but it’s more practical. It covers everything from sentence structure to misused words and expressions to using the active voice.
I’ve underlined 50% of the book.
This book will teach you how to write well so you can make fine art. And who doesn’t need a little of that? Read it like a guidebook. Keep it on your desk to flip through at random moments.
Yeah, I’ve pretty much convinced myself I need the 4th addition, after all. Even though my 3rd edition, wrinkled and falling apart as it is, is not going anywhere. :)
