A Soft Breath of Wind

18362366

I loved A Stray Drop of Blood for the same reason I now love A Soft Breath of Wind. The rich history. The hope-filled love story. The sweeping way Roseanna White fills a novel with faith.

Truth? I expected to not like A Soft Breath of Wind as much as I loved A Stray Drop of Blood. Sequels usually make me smile, but not as much as the first book. This one defied my expectations and made me love it more. Why? Zipporah. From the first page, she had my loyalty because she isn’t beautiful but doesn’t mind, she loves a man who doesn’t love her back (a tragedy I’m unfamiliar with but nonetheless gains my sympathy), and she loves Jesus.

This novel, set just after the time of Jesus, is a time period I don’t usually delve into (unless Roseanna’s the author). She made it real with those little details that make time travel possible.

Zipporah’s struggle is that she has the gift of discernment, and that gift constantly puts her life in danger. Where once her dream was to travel the world proclaiming the Gospel, instead she must stay inside if she is to stay safe. Meanwhile, the man she loves gets the chance to live her dream. When he comes home, however, he brings a threat no one could have seen coming.

I read this book in rapt awe at the way a story can grip your heart even when certain elements are not often explored or not easily understood. I thought Roseanna handled the spiritual themes of her latest release with great tact and grace. I highly recommend this book because it will take you back in time, introduce you to unforgettable characters, and remind you of the consequences–and blessings–of following the God we serve.

Read it, friends, and enjoy how the story doesn’t quite leave you even after you’ve read the last page.
