This third installment in the River of Time series kept me up late into the night, but I didn’t mind. Written in Lisa T. Bergren’s winning style and as action-packed as the first two, Torrent holds an honored place on my bookshelf.
Everything. Truly.
But to be more specific: I loved all the action and how there was never a good place to set it down. The plot just kept on twistin,’ the River kept on rollin,’ and I was swept up into the fabulous story.
Perhaps my favorite part of the entire River of Time series was how I seemed to feel everything. When Gabi panicked, my heartbeat raced. When she felt relieved, my shoulders slumped. And at one point in this book, when it seemed like all was lost, I was almost in tears, fearing imminent tragedy.
I refuse to spoil it for you, but the ending is absolutely wonderful. No threads are left loose, yet you get the feeling the story isn’t over.
As I mentioned before, The River of Time series rocks and is, hands-down, the best series of books I’ve read this year. The faith element woven throughout the story blends beautifully and the romance is swoon-worthy. A strong heroine, 14th-century Italia, and great gulps of adventure provide an amazing read.
“‘I think the trick to living fully,’ I said, thinking through each word, ‘is to appreciate what we have, day by day, regardless of what we know might come our way…If I live in fear of what might be, how can I truly live my life to the full in the present? And if I do not give myself to the day, to hope, to life, what do I miss?’ I raised my eyebrows and shook my head. ‘Life itself, I think. At least the way I wanna live it.'”
One word of advice: don’t start reading until you have all three and a long weekend. :)
